Helping Pets Impacted by Hurricane Harvey — FACE Foundation

The news images of thousands of Texans escaping the devastating flooding in the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey have been heartbreaking. We’ve also seen distressing photos of people carrying their rain-soaked pets through the floodwaters to safety. Sadly, not everyone is able to evacuate with their pets, and not all evacuation centers can accommodate animals. As […]

Outdoor movies? For free? Yes, please!

Love watching movies outdoors, but dread the thought of packing up the kiddos, driving into town, finding s parking spot (or paying waaay too much money for a garage), and then winding your way through a maze of people just to find a good spot for the family to enjoy a “free” outdoor movie??

Well, stop going through all that hassle, and do what we do instead: set-up your own backyard “Drive-In”! Our family has been doing this for years, and it’s the best thing since…well, since “Drive-Ins”! You don’t need a fancy projector & screen (or even a not-so-fancy one, and a white sheet on the side of your house or fence). Nowadays, most people have a laptop (or two) in their home, as well as bluetooth/portable speakers. If you’re one of those people, then a Backyard Drive-In is only a few steps from reality!

For our needs, we set up a Macbook on a folding table outside, usually by/on our patio. We then connect that to our Bose speakers, which we set up so that it plays “in-stereo” (fancy way of saying we put a speaker on either side of the laptop). From there, we set up our “stadium” seats (aka, folding chairs) in such a way that we can all see the movie. Popcorn, candy, & drinks are readily available, as are blankets, citronella lamps, and Off!

The best part of this – than quality family time – is that, if someone needs to use the restroom, we can pause the movie. And (usually), there’s no line! 😜 For us, this has become a family tradition that we look forward to every summer.

Now that we think about it, another “Drive-In” night is long overdue! Any thoughts on a great “End-of-Summer” movie? 👍
